I Scream, You Scream

“I want to go to there!!” That’s what I’m screaming right now.

Last year over 15,000 visitors enjoyed Delaware’s largest “family picnic” at the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Wilmington’s Rockwood Museum and Park.

Ice Cream Festival Wilmington

This year the event is new and improved with two whole days of summer fun – Saturday and Sunday (June 29-30).

While I won’t be able to attend (I’ll be rockin’ it out 90’s style to Counting Crows and The Wallflowers in Atlantic City), I’ll definitely be there in spirit. How could I NOT be? The entire festival features local purveyors including food vendors, restaurants, breweries, eco-crafters, live music, and of course, local creameries serving delicious, melt-y treats.

If YOU are a local, explore the website – rockwoodicecream.com – and bring the family for some summertime fun! (And enjoy a few cones for me.)

Corn on the Cone ice cream from UD Creamery. DELISH.

So tell me, locals and otherwise, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor? While the “Corn on the Cone” pictured above was delish, I prefer something deep, dark, and chocolate-y.

  1. Corn on a cone? wow. I might try that. We actually serve ice cream up here with chunk of lobster in it. Not a fan.

Right now we have Oreo cookie ice cream and chocolate M & M ice cream in the freezer. I plan on staying away from both. Don’t know if my plan will work.

    • Lobstah ice cream?? Weird! I don’t think I could get behind that, although lobster does have a sweetness to it that might pair well with cold ice cream.

I can’t even talk about any flavors right now. My mouth is watering; I’m going to eat some lettuce.

  2. I’m ruined for ice cream. I refuse to buy anything with high fructose corn syrup, which all the chocolatey crunchy carmely ice creams seem to have! It’s just Breyers vanilla or homemade.

Also, the musicians only play for 45 mins each? Takes that long just to set up 😉

    • Xanthan gum as a thickening agent is also a big culprit – even in “local” ice cream. I’m a fan of Breyers, too, and love to make milk shakes with their vanilla.

Well, The Joneses are consummate professionals, and I hope to hear you play SOON!

  3. Woodside Creamery’s coconut ice cream is super yummy. and at the UD creamery, I’ve always enjoyed the cookies and cream. But my very favorite is Sweet Lucy’s Moose Tracks. Yum.

Enjoy AC! We just got back from OC, NJ last weekend. Still in seashore withdrawal over here.

    • Thanks, Becky!

If you ever get by UD Creamery when they have Corn on the Cone, you have to give it a try. So, so good!

I love coconut ice cream; I’ll have to visit the ice cream stand near my house that sells Woodside to have a taste. 🙂

  4. The best ice cream I’ve ever had is from a place called Lopez Island Creamery. It’s made by nuns in the San Juan Islands and it’s so good you just eat pint after pint. You’re full, and tired, but you can’t stop because you don’t know what life will be like when you’re no longer eating it.

  5. Chocolate is my default flavor but there’s a company out of Ohio called Jeni’s, and I carry their ice cream at the store I work in. (I’m the frozen buyer.) They have a Lemon and Blueberries flavor that is only available for a few months. It’s unbelievable.

    • Ah! Lemon and blueberry are one of my favorite flavor combinations. Out this way, everyone loves “water ice” which is like shaved ice but fluffier. I always order lemon–it has actual lemon zest in it. But I’d rather have creamy, dairy filled ice cream any day!

  6. I’m not an ice cream person, per se, but I’ve had this weird craving for it lately. I go mostly for the kinds that have really cool stuff in them: chocolate covered waffle cone, cookie dough, peanut butter. etc.

One of the best flavors I ever had was Friendly’s peanut butter ice creme with marshmallow swirl. I think it had peanut butter cookie dough in it, too. Yeah. YEAH. I don’t even LIKE marshmallow, but this was… nirvana. Speaking of great bands…

P.S. – Please give Adam Duritz a kiss for me.

    • It’s because of all that hiking, Jules! Always makes me want burgers and beer followed by ice cream.

You are speaking my language with the mention of Friendly’s – they have a peanut butter cup sundae that is amazing, just because of the peanut butter sauce. I could eat a five scoop-ah right now.

PS – I wonder if Adam would wear a slap bracelet for me in his giant hair (after I kiss him of course)

      • That sundae is, hands down, my all-time favorite dessert.

Oh. My. If anyone could pull off that pic, it’s you. Add a WWSSD? Bracelet on one of his other dreads, and you’ve made it.

  7. What fun! I so enjoy local festivals and was bummed when I recently missed out on an old-fashioned soda festival due to attending a wedding. Favorite ice cream flavor? Peanut butter pie or something fruity in the land of gelato – passion fruit or mango. Yum!
