Chicken Meet and Greet
by rachelocal
My friend Valerie is a renaissance woman. She cares for three teenagers, welcomes foreign exchange students into her home, cooks, gardens, paints and sculpts, all while working full-time. But perhaps the best thing about Valerie (in my opinion) is that she raises chickens. Many of you know my love for chickens. I long to have a chicken coop in the backyard, where I can collect eggs in my pinafore ala Laura Ingalls Wilder from Little House on the Prairie. That’s […]

Greg and Ann’s CSA Supper
by rachelocal
I spent last Saturday evening in the company of good friends. My CSA partners, Greg and Ann, invited the husband and I over for dinner, along with our mutual friends Mike and Linda. The menu preparation began on Wednesday when Greg and I picked up our CSA share from Toby of Bayberry Farm. What started as bags of mustard greens, kale, lettuce, garlic scapes and cucumbers ended in a feast fit for a spoiled locavore. I took the scapes and […]

Local Start to Wedded Bliss
by rachelocal
Yesterday, the husband and I celebrated three years of wedded bliss. I’m not even being sarcastic when I say the words wedded bliss. (So far) life with the husband has been simply amazing. Of course, our marriage is not perfect. Whose is? We fight, we cry (okay, I’m the crier), we roll our eyes, but we also laugh and joke and love each other. Thinking back to three years ago, I’m struck with how my passion for all things local […]

Jungle Zucchini and Baby Birds
by rachelocal
I visited John the other day. A visit was way overdue for two reasons. The first because the kitchen scraps I save for his compost pile were attracting flies and other vermin. The second because too much time had passed since my last visit. I was having withdrawals–the shakes and everything. John and Kathy were out in the yard when I walked up the driveway, weighted down by two buckets of smelly food waste. After John dumped what he considers […]

I’m a Mostly Vegetarian, Sometimes Vegan, Always Locavore (Sort of)
by rachelocal
I called my friend Allison the other morning to discuss our upcoming summer plans. We always veer off topic so here’s how part of our conversation went. . . Me: “I’ve been watching a lot of documentaries lately. Documentaries like Forks over Knives.” A: “I can’t bring myself to watch it.” Me: “Well, don’t, because it will change your mind about the food you eat.” A: “I won’t watch it then.” Me: “I’m thinking that what I’m really getting at […]

Gifts for Dad: A Retrospective
by rachelocal
In all my years as a daughter of my dad, I’ve never known what to buy him for birthdays, Christmas, and Father’s Day. My dad’s not the kind of guy that needs anything. Nor does he want much. All good qualities in a person, except when you’re his daughter trying to find the perfect gift. That’s why I’ve given him a long list of items he most certainly stored in a box marked “UNNECESSARY AND KIND OF COMICAL GIFTS I’VE RECEIVED […]

Farmers’ Market Carnival Extravaganza
by rachelocal
Take me to the Farmers’ Market, ANY Farmers’ Market, and I’m like a kid in a candy store or a country girl in the big city. The sight of fresh-from-the-farm produce, artisan bread or handmade jewelry gets me every single time. So when my friend Natalie and I ventured to the Newark Co-op Farmers’ Market one fine Sunday afternoon, I was blissfully giddy. The number one reason I enjoy the Farmers’ Market is because I get to talk to the […]

Local Cheese and Personality at Fromage
by rachelocal
Walking into Fromage, a Cheese Boutique in Middletown is like reuniting with an old high school friend. Time has passed, but your affinity for each other hasn’t. Mainly because Christopher Pride, the proprietor, knows his way around some banter. The husband and I walked into the store while Chris chatted with a friendly couple buying cheese, bread, and meats for a dinner party. Oh, the banter I was privy to! While listening and giggling on occasion, I looked around the shop. Local items abound at Fromage! Chris […]

Two Lists for Local Eating
by rachelocal
Today’s the day; I am a locavore. As of right now, I will only eat locally sourced foods. I’m not gonna lie, I kind of feel like I’m going on a diet. I am, after all, purposely restricting my food choices. In an effort to allow my new locavore status to inspire me rather than scare me (I love Italian cheeses so much!), I decided to make two lists. The first list states the reasons I’m embarking on this All […]

Community Food Drive Scrapbook
by rachelocal
The numbers aren’t in yet, but Eastpoint Church donated a ton of food to the Food Bank of Delaware today. The day flew by, filled with fun chats, lively music, painted faces (and legs!), and generous people. Thanks to Starbucks, our volunteers, and all the retail stores that participated in this year’s Community Food Drive. Looking forward to next year already!

Twelves Grill and What I Did With the Leftovers
by rachelocal
There’s no better way to spend an afternoon than gallivanting around the countryside with a friend. That’s just what I did Tuesday with my friend, Natalie. We took to the road to find something good and local, and ended up in West Grove, Pennsylvania at Twelves Grill and Cafe. Twelves is an elegant restaurant housed in a renovated 1883-built bank. You can even reserve space for your own wine in the walk-in brass vault to enjoy when you inevitably make […]

Community Food Drive this Saturday!
by rachelocal
For all you locals out there, join my church, Eastpoint, for a Community Food Drive to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware. Close to 242,000 Delawareans turn to emergency food assistance each year. With that in mind, Starbucks in People’s Station (2470 Pulaski Hwy, Newark, DE 19702) kindly agreed to host the event with us. The Starbucks and Eastpoint staffs are gearing up for a big turnout. You can bring your non-perishable food donation directly to the main drop off location at Starbucks (you […]

Local Treats + Cows = Somerset Farm
by rachelocal
“Who wants a treat?” When my dad uttered these words, my eight-year-old self would fly into a flurry of excitement. A treat meant ice cream. And ice cream meant Peaceful Meadows, a dairy farm in Massachusetts (my homeland). Not only does Peaceful Meadows have amazing ice cream treats, but it also has cows. Lots of them to watch whilst enjoying your Coconut Chocolate Almond Hot Fudge Sundae with extra (and homemade) whipped cream. Nothing better in the world even now […]
